Cafés in Amsterdam North

There are some fantastic cafés in Amsterdam North serving delicious food and tasty drinks. In this blog post I will highlight some or our favourite spots in Amsterdam Noord, to stop for a bite to eat, or quench that thirst.

Tolhuistuin

If you get the ferry from Amsterdam Centraal Station to Buiksloterweg, then one of the first buildings you will encounter is the Tolhuistuin. This cultural hotspot hosts concerts, parties and a large cafe/restaurant that has more than 200 seats inside, and two large terraces outside.

Sitting right next to the River IJ, and just a stones through from the city centre, Tolhuistuin is ideally situated to be just far enough out of the city to avoid the hustle and bustle, but close enough that a short 5 minute journey on the ferry will take you back in to the centre.

Tolhuistuin has a wide selection of delectable food and a broad range of drinks available, so whether you are trying to warm up with a coffee and apple pie, or meeting friends for a drink with a view, Tolhuistuin has got you covered.

Café De Ceuvel

One of Café De Ceuvel primary goals is to lead by example in sustainability without compromis ing on quality. Since its inception in 2014, De Ceuvel has been committed to making a difference in the world one plate at a time. They work together with a whole range of initiatives that ensure that every plate, beer and drink they put on the table makes the world a little bit more beautiful. From having Co2 free coffee, to sourcing their beer from small breweries, they are always trying to find ways to have as little impact on the planet as possible.

De Ceuvel also hosts many different events throughout the year from: lectures about sustainability, to art house films and documentaries and you can find what events are running here. So, why not stop by Cafe De Ceuvel, have a tasty coffee knowing that you are helping to help the planet.

Hidden in a warehouse in Amsterdam North, is The Netherlands first café with a skate ramp, bar, restaurant and live events venue. Opened in 2017, Skate Cafe is a unique spot that allows you to grab a drink, have a skate, and listen to some live music, all-in one place. That why Skate cafe can not mis in our favourites of Cafés in Amsterdam North. You don’t need to be a skater to enjoy the café though, they have an excellent food and drink menu as well as regular events running throughout the year, and you can check out what events are running here.

Café ONS

This beautiful café tucked away between 2 streets just a 5 minute walk from Buiksloterweg ferry, has a wonderful feeling that you are returning home when you enter. Whether it is the staff that greet you with a smile, the woodburning stove on the terrace, or the homecooked food that warms the spirit, there is a sense of homeliness that isn’t found in every café.

Café ONS has a wide selection of cocktails available, as well as a fantastic food menu (the burger is a definite stand-out), some beers from local breweries and a strawberry cheesecake that waters the mouth. In the summer months the terrace gets transformed into an open sun trap, perfect for a glass of rose or cold beer, and in the winter months it becomes enclosed with comfy lighting, patio heaters and a centrepiece woodburning stove that creates a magnificient, warming atmosphere. So whatever the month, be sure to stop by Café ONS for a memorable experience. Definitely one of our favourites Cafés in Amsterdam North.

Cafe ‘t Sluisje

Entering Café ’t Sluisje is like taking a step back in time several hundred years, and it is the perfect example of a ‘Bruin Café’: a traditional neighbourhood gathering spot. The building has been there for nearly 500 years and there are photos and items on the walls that detail the immense history of the building and times gone past.

’t Sluisje means ‘lock’ in Dutch, and it is aptly named as it is perched near a marina, by a lock on a gorgeous street named ‘Nieuwendammerdijk’. There is a large terrace area which overlooks the water, which in the summer months is a hotspot of locals coming together to share a drink and a laugh, and in the winter the terrace is warmed through patio heaters and blankets. I think you get why we have this one in our favorites Cafés in Amsterdam North.

Cafe ’t Sluisje serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with a wide selection of hot and cold drinks. They also have local beers on tap, as well as helpful staff that are willing to talk you through their menu (their apple pie is a showstopper too). To get a taste of traditional Dutch café atmosphere look no further than Café ‘t Sluisje.

Café Keppler

Serving delicious breakfast and lunch, Café Keppler prides itself in ensuring that the food and drink they serve is of the freshest and highest quality. They bake their own bread and roast their coffee beans several times a week to ensure that the flavour of the coffee remains potent. Every Friday they are open until 11pm serving soups, salads and an extremely tasty cheese fondue with a broad range of different drinks.

There is a large terrace area out of the front of the café, which during the summer months catches the sun throughout the day, and is the perfect place to drink a coffee and read a book. However, whatever the weather Café Keppler is a gorgeous local neighbourhood café that is well worth the visit.

Pllek

Pllek is an open minded, relaxed restaurant in Amsterdam Noord, which values healthy, sustainable and high quality food which it delivers in abundance. Situated in NDSM, Pllek is a unique restaurant serving high quality food that is largely sourced locally and organically. At least 75% of their menu is vegetarian, of which at least 25% is vegan, and the meat and fish they do serve comes from the wild.

One of Pllek’s stand out features is the man-made beach that is to the rear of the restaurant. During the summer months this becomes a hub of good music, dance and lots of laughter. They also hosts many different events from: yoga, Dj’s, art and live music, and every Friday and Saturday night the tables get put away and the decks come out so you can dance until the wee hours of the morning (entrance is free also!). So, whether you want to have a tasty meal or dance the night away, Pllek has you covered.

De VerbroederIJ

De Verbroederij is a local neighbourhood café in every sense; they are supported by the local community and work closely with local partners who each contribute to making De Verbroederij the welcoming venue that it is. From the freshly baked apple pie that gets dropped off every Thursday from ‘Bijzonder Amsterdams’, to ‘Omas Soep’ which brings elderly people and young volunteers together to make soup from leftover vegetables using their original recipe, De Verbroederij is intrinsictly linked to the community.

They have their own vegetable garden that they grow vegetables for the volunteers, and plenty of flowers to make the bees happy too. Not to mention 2 pigs named Barry & Rosita that they use their manure to help feed the vegetable garden, everything comes full circle.

Their menu caters to meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike, and they have a wonderful service where one can pay forward a coffee or a meal to those whose pockets are a little light, helping everyone regardless of economic status.

In the summer months their sanded ‘beach’ area comes alive with laughter and music, and throughout the year they have lots of different events (many that are free) running and you can check out what is on the agenda here.
