January tips

@ Lenneke - Tip Noord

Whatever the month, there is always plenty going on in Amsterdam to keep you entertained. Here are our highlights of upcoming events in Amsterdam Noord in 2024 that you don’t want to miss.

STRAAT Museum – Urban artivism

There is a growing awareness within our collective consciousness that the environmental issues we face as a society today, need to first be acknowledged before we can address them. This is the goal of the ‘Urban Activism’ exhibition at Straat Museum; to raise awareness of the issues we face, and to call for action to make the changes necessary to rectify them.
One of the exhibition’s highlights is an installation made by environmental activist Dulk. From Spanish origin, he is one of the most important names in the Valencian street art scene and his art has a strong ecological conviction to defend ecosystems and the most vulnerable species. He invites the viewer to be part of a unique fantasy world, full of colours and energy. Take a trip to a dream world with animals and natural spaces that tells personal, universal and unique stories.
The exhibition is running until 28th January and you can book your tickets here.

Het zonnehuis – Pitou

Doors open 19:30, Main Programme 20:30
From the age of nine Pitou Nicolaes has been singing in a classical choir where she discovered the indescribable feeling of singing in a group, and harmonies. At the age of eighteen she became interested with pop, rock and guitar and the songs wrote themselves.
Combining both classical layered harmonies, vocals and melodies with modern synthesizers, Pitou’s debut album ‘Big Tear’, released in 2023, was received with critical acclaim.
Now she is performing in the beautiful heritage venue of Zonnehuis on the 25th January and this is sure to be a concert you don’t want to miss. You can buy your tickets here.

Warm Reading Evening with Christine Otten – 30th Jan

Doors open 18:45, Main Programme 19:00 – 21:00

In 2024, the Cultural Pharmacy will organize an intimate reading evening in the Reading House of the Tolhuistuin every last Tuesday of the month. There are beautiful texts that we will read together, there is a writer with whom we will talk and there is hot soup from Tuindorp Delicious. The writers who participate have a link with Amsterdam North in one way or another and are concerned with what literature can mean for people in all kinds of situations.
We kick off the series together with writer and North resident Christine Otten. In addition to her work, Otten is the founder of the Blocknotes Foundation, through which she gives writing workshops in a number of detention centers. Last year the collection Gevangenispost was published with work by writers from inside and outside. This evening we will read several stories from the collection and talk to Christine Otten about the meaning of writing for herself and for the people in her writing groups.
Entrance is free. Registration is required due to limited space. You can register by sending an email to: vraag@cultureleapotheek.nl
